AltCoin is shorthand for alternative to Bitcoin. Describing any cryptoasset that is not Bitcoin.

It sometimes is employed more specifically to refer to projects employing Bitcoin’s codebase as their foundation. While touting a solution to a perceived limitation of Bitcoin the project is solving.
